What happens to the Semen after Sex with a Woman?

Hi this is a serious question please. My friend and i disagreed as to what happens to semen once it has been ejaculated during sexual intercourse into the woman's vagina. I told him it would trickle back out within a matter of minutes/few hours: however my mate disagrees & claimed it takes at least some days to exit the vagina and cited evidence that when he goes swimming daily (he is a fitness fanatic) - he often sees bits of semen floating under the water when women are doing laps in the pool every morning?

It either gets absorbed into the vagina, or it liquifies and begins to drip out after some time, and it can take a few days for all of it to come out.
